SNELSTON SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION
'On Thursday October 18th, Mr Edward Forman, of Cacklow Hill, Snelston, received the sad news his eldest son, Lance corpl. Edwin Forman, had been killed in action in France, about September 16th. Lance corpl. Edwin Forman 12184, who was 24 years of age, and single, joined the Notts. and Derbyshire regiment as a private in January, 1914. He was sent to France the following September, about a month after the outbreak of war, and, with the exception of two short visits to his home, has been there ever since. He was made Lance Corporal in the field on July 12th last. He took part in the engagements at Ypres, Marne, Aisne, La Bassee, and fell at the Somme. It will be remembered that on his visit to his home in August 1915, he gave a very interesting address on the war, in the reading room at Snelston. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, Lance Corporal Forman was a good soldier, a strong Churchman (having been a chorister at Saint Mary’s Church, Weston on Trent, for several years), and a total abstainer. Snelston has lost the first of her sons in the terrible conflict, and her deepest sympathy is extended to the parents, friends, and relations of the brave young soldier. Mr Edward Forman’s younger son, William, also belonging to the Notts. and Derbyshires, is at the present time serving in France.'
